Is your next hybrid a hydraulic?
from Mind Threads Web Design

Many years ago my CAD teacher told us that he wanted to design a new type of car. One that used hydraulic motors at the wheels and a small motor to power the system. He also described what’s now called regenerative breaking (where the hydraulic motors are reversed and become pumps). He described the accumulator and how the system basically worked. It sounded viable at the time (although I doubted it’s efficiency). Well Mr. Byrd, this link and article is for you!!! Take a look at this site: www.valentintechnologies.com It’s Mr. Byrd’s car!! Almost… Now Mr. Byrd was a very smart guy, (If I remember right, he worked at Boeing for several years as an Engineer before passing on his knowledge to us dweebs) but he was also the down to earth type. Built his own butter bean shelling machine. But this was in 1985-87. So now, 20+ years later someone’s finally trying to get around to this idea? What’s so new? Why haven’t prototypes already b ...

How to create a Part Number or Options List in Excel
from Mind Threads Web Design
(2010/4/2 17:20)
|
A while back I wanted to create a new part number scheme for an existing product. It sounded simple at first. 78 different models, and only 7 options. I wanted the new part number to be ‘intelligent’ in that each digit or group of digits meant a certain option choice. The problem is that within the options, you could have several different choices! 7 quickly balloned out to over 100,000! I knew this was the stuff databases were made for, but I also felt sure I could pull it off in excel as well. (No Visual Basic required, as I don’t do any programming!) After a couple of days on the web with my friend google, I finally found a solution, what I was trying to do was called ‘The Cartesian Product’. The solution I found is posted below: I want to produce a list from two arrays.A 1B 2C 3I want the result to beA1A2A3B1B2B3C1C2C3This is referred to as obtaining the Cartesian product. Here'sthe way I know how to do it. This uses MSQUERY, which doe ...

This is a quick one.. Ever wonder what software that cool new web site you just found is running? Sometimes you can view the source code of the web page to get a clue, most of the time though this isn’t the case. This web site does some of the chores for you. It’s not perfect, but it does give you quite a bit.. Give it a try! It actually can detect some of the wordpress extensions and menu tools too! http://builtwith.com Share on Facebook

Why Choose Wordpress?
from Mind Threads Web Design
(2010/3/1 20:30)

Over the past 3-5 years I’ve tinkered with, installed, used, and promoted a couple of different CMS (Content Management Systems – or web site platforms). The funny thing is, I’ve come around to Wordpress more than once for my own site. Xoops was great, but it seemed it’s development has stalled. Drupal was super, but it seemed a little harder than most (I’m not a developer). Joomla was closer still, but seemed to be missing something , and at the time it was missing a couple of what I felt were critical modules. So WHY do I keep coming back to Wordpress and suggest you try it too? Anyone can publish content to the site with almost no experience. This includes uploading photos and now, even creating photo albums. You can even publish via email and phone. I tell people, ‘If you can use basic Microsoft Word, you can use Wordpress.” It’s the #1 blog/CMS software on the internet and is free and open source. (This means it’s prob ...

A Gathering of Eagles

February 28th, we gathered on a chilly very windy day to help promote the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Steve Thompson, a former Eagle Scout himself, helped gather the people in the picture (below left). They are ALL Eagle Scouts from Richmond County from years past. It was great seeing all those guys again even though some I didn’t recognize right away. (It probably has been 25 years or longer since I was actively involved in scouts). We caught up a little, and joked about past camp outs, snipe hunts, and some of our shared trips and memories. It was also great seeing all our past troop leaders, district, and council leaders from years past too. All of us gathered in this last photo. Thanks Steve, and everyone else who put this together! Linking your Wordpress Blog to Facebook via RSS
from Mind Threads Web Design

As I’ve stated somewhere on this site before, I currently have NO idea where this site will end up. One day I want to post about Facebook games and apps, the next day it’s some community event, and the next maybe something CAD related. It’s kind of like myself, in to a little of everything. Well tonight I’ve hooked up the blog here to a Facebook application called RSS Graffiti . It allows post from my blog to automatically appear in my wall post. I’ve already got David Goldstein’s Add to Facebook plug-in running on the blog so anyone can click one button and the blog entry will appear in FB, but I’m SO LAZY I was looking for something even easier. So far this application is very close to my ideal. There are several apps already on FB that do the same thing but a couple of things about this one caught my eye: It can work on Groups as well as individual pages. So far no other RSS feed reader advertises they can do this. Only catch I’ ...

Steve Thompson (Eagle Scout 1975) is trying to gather up all the Eagle Scouts from Richmond County to help celebrate the 100 Yr Anniversary of Boy Scouts. He’s arranged for a photo to be taken February 28th, 3:00 pm at the steps of the Richmond County Courthouse. Please contact him for more information or to just say ‘Hi’ and let him know where you are now. (Should be an interesting story for the newspaper) Please contact Steve at 910-817-7193 or Steveatmb@yahoo.com. Share on Facebook

How to restore filtered facebook applications
from Mind Threads Web Design
(2010/2/13 0:43)

If you’ve followed my earlier post, you may come across the need to restore a newsfeed for an application after you’ve turned it off. The new Facebook layout is very weird in that it doesn’t turn things on at the same place you turn them off?? Confusing yes.. Anyhow, here’s the how to.. You’ll probably need to change the feed type to Top News. This is required to turn an application back on. Scroll down to the bottom of the newsfeed column and select Edit Options from the right hand side. Simply select the feed you want to turn back on! Again, simple.. but why they chose to have it in a different screen than the other I have no clue.. If you have other questions on FB how to, please ask I’m no expert but I’ll try to help if I can. Thanks, Gene Share on Facebook

Facebook filtering extra
from Mind Threads Web Design

The other day I posted a how-to for filtering out applications you don’t want to see. Today I want to give you a quick and easy way to filter for an application you DO want to see. To advance quickly in some games it helps to click on post from other FB users. This will give you bonuses or gifts depending on the game or application. Please see the following link: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?filter=app_10979261223 The part before the numbers tells Facebook to ONLY show the application identified by the number and of course the number is the application ID assigned by Facebook to a program or game. Once you click on the link you can then bookmark it in your web browser. Then when you need to see just Mafia Wars or just Farmville, you can simply click on the pre-saved bookmark. Simple and easy right! Here’s some links and numbers to help get you started on your on filtered bookmarks: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?filter=app_10979261223 – Mafia Wars http: ...

How to filter your friends Face Book applications
from Mind Threads Web Design
(2010/2/10 20:53)
|
Do you want to keep up with your friends, but not their games? Games like Mafia Wars and Farmville put a LOT of post out there and sometimes you may miss something important like new photos or comments. I’m just as guilty, since I play a LOT of games and probably have been ‘un-friended’ by a few due to that… not any more, at least if they’ll follow the following directions.. Step 1 – Make sure your feed is set to Most Recent and that the application you want to block or filter is somewhere in the list. Step 2 – Hover the mouse over the corner of the feed you want to filter out and you’ll see the ‘Hide’ box appear. Click on it. Step 3 – After you select ‘Hide’, Facebook will prompt you to hide the the application. Step 4 – Just refresh the screen and you should now notice no more ?insert application name?!!! I’ve done this and it works quite well. I still get the invites (not as annoy ...
